Every now and then an interesting thread of e-mail from the Camarilla Toreador mailing list catches my attention.
In this particular instance it is an In Character Discussion about Beauty and I felt compelled to include it with
these pages as I believe that these IC comments by Toreador Characters help define a Toreadors perspective and their
closeness to humanity. Anyway, enough of my rambling, on with the show.
"What is beauty? Tell me truly. What is beauty to you? Fill my mind with your wonder and
grace. In the face of adversity, what is beauty to you?
A song sent to me pulls at my spirit. Can you hear it's voice? Give me your voice to drown the echo of my dreams...
As we are clan... As we are family... tell me the answer to this song. "

"Unless it is such that causes you to recoil from it, there is beauty in nearly everything.
Walk forward ten steps. As you do so, feel the play of your muscles beneath your skin. Now rest your body and
focus your attention only on your sense of sight. Try to count the colors that come pouring in. Try to quantify
the near infinity of shades and textures.
Seven senses and, better yet, a mind that is able to question, to quest. These are beauty. Life is beauty.
Love appreciates beauty even as it -is- beauty.
There is beauty in social interaction. As are the kine, we are gregarious. That sense of wonder as you come in
contact with another mind that you appreciate, that is beauty. When milord Tharke introduced me to the
Sullivan-Croft line and I realized that after 150+ years, I was no longer alone. I wept bloody tears for the
beauty of that moment.
I hold the photograph of a Toreador whom I've never met, and each time I gaze at the black and white print I am
broken by her beauty. Recently, a particularly decadant lover's sinful kiss drew my soul up through my body,
leaving me numb to all but the press of her lips against mine, the play of her tongue, the sweet taste of her
breath, the tender caress of her fingertips against my cheek. Mere days prior I awakened to a new sunset in the
gentle arms of a costumer, knowing that I'd not have to face that night alone. All of these events we take for
granted -- especially we Toreador -- and that is tragic, for its commonality (is that even a word?) doesn't make
it any less beautiful. "

"Beauty is not something described, but something felt and seen. There is no definition,
only example. A line of song that carries emotion, the way the moonlight strikes the petals of a rose, the embrace
of a friend or a lover, or a simple moment of solitude, or an act of kindness in this dark world we live in. It
can be invisible to the senses, and yet in the heart. It can be absent from the most gorgeous but cold-hearted
of Toreador, and present in the warm soul of a twisted face Nosferatu. Beauty is simply what we wish it
to be."
