Seasons

The concept of Toreador Seasons is very intuitive. Based off of the idea that fashion changes, art changes, and gossip eventually grows old, this mechanic is being introduced into play. A Toreador Season lasts for one calendar year, beginning during the salon at the International Conclave and ending as the Toreador enter the salon at the subsequent International Conclave. Toreador In Clan Prestige, positive and negative lasts for one Toreador Season. Guild Didaskoli hold office for the duration of one Toreador Season. As such, this is a standardized unit of time under which Clan Toreador may ebb and flow.

Clan Prestige

The system for granting and stripping Clan Prestige is still intact under 5.0. The only change is that Toreador In Clan Prestige can no longer be added to social traits in challenges. No non-Toreador characters may have Toreador Clan Prestige. Because Toreador In Clan Prestige is accrued over the course of a Toreador Season, there is no longer approval for In Clan Prestige based off of character background.

Gaining and Losing Toreador In Clan Prestige

At the opening of a season, a Toreador automatically gains In Clan Prestige for holding a Camarilla Position, equal to their Camarilla Status derived from that position. These In Clan Prestige traits would be denoted as the Camarilla Status that the character has from his station, so that whenever the character mentions his current Camarilla station, that In Clan Prestige is automatically understood. For example, a PC Prince who holds the Camarilla statuses of Acknowledged, Well-known, Famous, Exalted and Feared would get three Clan Prestige points for the 'Princely' statuses, but does not get to count the Feared as it is not tied to a Camailla stations.Ancillae gain one additional In Clan Prestige and Elders gain two additional In Clan Prestige as a modifier for their age. This may be represented whenever a character mentions the social level that his character is a part of, and the In Clan Prestige is automatically understood. note: If there is a 'pretender' they may claim the addition Clan Prestige as long as the following two criteria are met: 1) They continue to get away with the perceived age and 2) They post their age publically. If the Toreador is a Journeyman or better in one of the Toreador Guilds, that Toreador gains one additional In Clan Prestige. This is represented whenever a Toreador mentions his Guild Rank, and the In Clan Prestige is automatically understood. Finally, each member of the Council of Petals and the Convocation of Houses gains an additional In Clan Prestige. This represents the sway and power those two entities potentially hold over the clan.

Gaining and Losing Toreador In Clan Prestige is done in a number of ways, each done to the extent where it catches the Clan's attention:

  • Actively producing art
  • Keeping collections of art
  • Maintaining museums and galleries
  • Holding major social gatherings
  • Maintaining a strong and able Camarilla position
  • Working in ways which are in the interests of fellow clanmates such as continual assistance to their Primogen
  • Exhibiting strong awareness and application of social conventions

Only Toreador with greater In Clan Prestige may grant or strip another Toreador of In Clan Prestige without inciting Scandal. A Toreador of the same In Clan Prestige may grant or strip another Toreador of In Clan Prestige, but without providing evidence to the Clan which would sanction the action, that Toreador invites Scandal to himself. While Toreador In Clan Prestige based off of Camarilla Station uses the traits derived from that station to refer to itself, when gaining or losing In Clan Prestige, the Toreador granting or stripping the In Clan Prestige may use traits appropriate to the situation. Additionally, Toreador Princes and Primogen may grant Clan Prestige reguardless of their current level of Clan Prestige, no matter if the Toreador is in their domains or not. The Didasklos of each guild may grant Clan Prestige to any member of their guild as they see fit.

Here is an example how online, a Toreador player may represent her character's In Clan Prestige:

Jane Doe
Ancillae Primogen of Nowheresville
Journeyman Hesphaestos
Toreador – "Celebrated"

In the example above, Jane is representing her In Clan Prestige of 4 (+1 for her station of Primogen, +1 for her standing as an Ancillae, +1 for her participation in the Toreador Guilds and +1 for "Celebrated" as an In Clan Prestige which was earned that season through role-play).

Under Scandal Play, had Jane Doe owned the In Clan Prestige of "Scandalous" instead of "Celebrated", the player would have to list "Scandalous", and other players would respond knowing that the character Jane Doe has In Clan Prestige 2 (+1 for her station of Primogen, +1 for her standing as an Ancillae, +1 for her participation in the Toreador Guilds and -1 for "Scandalous" as an In Clan Prestige which was earned that season through role-play).

A Toreador may accrue a maximum of 7 In Clan Prestige over the course of a season. At the beginning of a new season, all In Clan Prestige gained during the past season is lost. This maximum is only for those 'granted' Clan Prestige statuses, not those derived from age, position and guild membership. As such, an Elder Toreador Prince who is at least Journeyman in a guild, and is a member of both the Council of Petals and the Convocation of Houses could hold as much as 15 Clan Prestige points.

Examples of How Toreador In Clan Prestige Can Be Applied

In General, the Toreador with the greater In Clan Prestige in a Toreador specific circumstance will have his words heeded over Toreador with lesser In Clan Prestige. Any Toreador with equal or greater In Clan Prestige than another Toreador may question the words or the actions of that Toreador without inciting Scandal.

A Toreador with In Clan Prestige equal to or greater than the Toreador Primogen's In Clan Prestige while in the Primogen's city may demand to be included in the Primogen's Le Salon Fermé without invoking Scandal. A Primogen in this circumstance may invoke Scandal upon herself if she refuses. A Le Salon Fermé is a Toreador Primogen's circle of confidants and advisors. A Toreador within a city who obtains greater In Clan Prestige than the city's Toreador Officer may challenge that Officer for his station without inviting Scandal from the rest of the Clan upon himself.

Given the In Clan Prestige of the Host of a Toreador Gathering:

  • A Toreador of greater In Clan Prestige than the host may be invited by the host to perform or to show art at her gathering provided that the host offers a minor boon to the artist. In this case, the artist of higher In Clan Prestige is showing favor to the host of the gathering.

  • A Toreador of equal In Clan Prestige as the host may be invited by the host to perform or to show art at her gathering for no boon exchange. The artist may respectfully decline without inciting Scandal.

  • A Toreador of less In Clan Prestige than the host may be invited by the host to perform or to show art at her gathering provided that the artist owes the host a minor boon. In this case, the host of higher In Clan Prestige is showing favor to the artist.

  • If a Toreador artist of lower In Clan Prestige than the host of a gathering would like to petition to have her work shown at the host's gathering where she must approach the host to gain his attention, it is standard for that artist to offer the host two minor boons.

Scandal

The concept of Toreador Scandal is a very simple concept to understand. It is the basis and means used within Clan Toreador to identify members of Clan Toreador who have committed grievous social faux pass and as such should suffer the consequences of those actions in a context outside of the means provided by Sect Status Systems. Many ways which a Toreador may invite scandal for himself are detailed through out the Toreador Player's Handbook. It is greatly encouraged for players through exploration of social circumstance through the perspective of their characters to come up with more ways Scandal may be incited upon clanmates.

A Toreador invites Scandal upon himself as identified by any other Toreador with the same or greater level of Toreador Clan Prestige. When a Toreador is caught up in scandal, he loses one In Clan and gains the negative In Clan Prestige "Scandalous". "Scandalous" is lost in only one of four circumstances:

  1. The "Scandalous" Toreador somehow finds the means to clear his name of the scandal (usually by bringing about evidence to discredit his accuser).
  2. The "Scandalous" Toreador may somehow redeem himself to his clan by gaining In Clan Prestige.
  3. The "Scandalous" Toreador may involve another Toreador who had greater In Clan Prestige than his accuser. This Toreador would vouch for the sanctity and good of "Scandalous" actions when the social faux passes occurred (that Toreador with the greater In Clan Prestige may be inviting scandal upon himself in taking that action).
  4. Upon the passing of a Season, the "Scandalous" In Clan Prestige automatically goes away.

Traits other than "Scandalous" may be applied if appropriate to the circumstance.

Social Gatherings

Gatherings are at the very heart of all Toreador. They are the most social of creatures and thrive on the opportunities provided by any gathering. Some gatherings are more 'special' than others, Toreador competing to be invited and included in the festivities. These are each discussed in more detail in the Salon Styled Play section.

Art in Play

Players do not have to be exceptional artists to play exceptional Toreador. However, what is required at the very least is a full desciption of specific pieces your character produces to be kept by you and your ST. Having done research in your character's art, how it is produced, the history of its genre, and the impact and importance it has had in the art world, are also very useful tools to keep handy for effective role play.

Art can be represented in a variety of ways. Here are some suggestions:

  • Artwork genuinely produced by the player may be displayed.
  • Art from other sources may be used, i.e., claiming an actual poet's poem as your character's, displaying a poster of a work of art, or even karioke to a piece of music. Take care not to choose very famous work such as the Mona Lisa, William Blake, or Michael Jackson. When performing or displaying this art, be sure to credit the true out of character artist by announcing it in out of character terms, or perhaps tacking a note at the bottom of the display
  • A work of art may be described and a written description can be pinned to a board (in the case of something displayed) or read out (in the case of something performed).
  • At the same time, the appropriate performance level should be given, either by displaying it or simply announcing it (whichever is least intrusive).

Players need to be given both an idea of what the piece of art is and a guideline as to the competence of the creator. From that point, they can roleplay their judgment of the piece
