I sit here, in front of my computer asking myself what is art? What is the sole being of a Toreador? Well, being on the internet I turned to the search engines for the answer.. and after a lot of looking I found some satisfactory and not so satisfactory answers.
First of all, I found something that I thought is quite true in our perception of art:
"Art has not always been what we think it is today. An object regarded as Art today may not have been perceived as such when it was first made, nor was the person who made it necessarily regarded as an artist. Both the notion of "art" and the idea of the "artist" are relatively modern terms."

The Encyclopedia Britannica defines art as:
..the use of skill and imagination in the creation of aesthetic objects, environments, or experiences that can be shared with others.
"art" Britannica Online.
Ok, ok, your probabally asking what this has got to do with being a Toreador.. Well, art is everything to a Toreador as I have previously said. A few fellow Toreadors said it a little better than this during a discussion on a mailing list:
Art is an expression of how people, objects, and events have effected our lives. It is brought forth from the depth of our souls to express to others the pain, joy, love, or hate we experienced from it. What lengths would I go? Could I pour out my heart and not regret the feelings it brought to others. I would go to whatever lengths needed and not regret any of what I have done. When I sing, I do so to inspire myself and others, whether it be to stand strong against a fierce enemy or to remember a lost love from times past.
There is a saying that you can please some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time. Not everyone will like the song I sing, either for the content or possibly the style. I expect this. We are all different in our personalities and beliefs; it is that which makes us strong. If we all liked the same thing or felt the same way, how could we create anything new. I can only hope that the others who hear me sing will also understand this for I will not back down to please the majority. I would die defending what I believe in whether it be the song I sing or write. I see them as an expression of myself and if I should back down because of opposed feelings, it would be like losing faith in myself and my art, and I would rather die than do that.

And anothers opinion:
Art is created by intent.
I have seared my eyes and flesh to watch the Sun rise over Kenya, and it is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen; I have seen the water fall over Gullfos in Iceland, and other wonders, but they were not art. Art is created for the sake of someone, be it the artist or the audience. Perhaps both.
Perhaps it is because I have made my work the study of Art rather than its creation, but it occurs to me that without us, the watcher, and the watched, there can be no art. But when I am asked what art is, I have no real answer. That is why Art is so miraculous; it defies definition.
